The Cost Of Personal Training In San Francisco

cost of personal trainer san Francisco

Are you interested in hiring a personal trainer in San Francisco and wondering: “How much does personal trainer cost in the Bay Area/San Francisco?” In this post I will answer this question and provide real life examples with links.

The short answer: $50-$200 per hour.

What Determines The Cost Of Personal Training

With such a large range in the cost of personal training, you’re probably wondering: “What’s the difference between a trainer who charges $50 vs $200?” Here are some of the factors that determine how much a person trainer charges in SF:

1. Location. If your trainer works in a central location in the city, they are paying more overhead for their space, and they will need to charge more to cover that overhead. Similarly, if a trainer works on zoom from home, outdoors, or from home they *might* charge less, although not necessarily. I know trainers who train on zoom and still charge $200 per hour.

2. Demand For Their Services. If a trainer is in high demand (for any reason) they are likely to increase their prices. Popularity pays.

3. Expertise And Education.  Some trainers invest a lot of money in continuing education workshops, massage therapy, or nutrition trainings. These trainers may charge more because they have higher levels of education. A caveat – just because a trainer charges more does NOT, however, necessarily mean they are more educated.

4. Packages/Memberships. Some trainers will offer discounts when you pay for multiple sessions up front.

How To Choose A Personal Trainer

Personal trainers help clients with many goals. Here are some reasons you might be searching for a personal trainer:

1. You need someone who keeps exercise fun.
2. You need accountability to exercise.
3. You want to lose weight.
4. You want to gain muscle.
5. You want to learn about nutrition.
6. You want to learn how to move better.
7. You want to overcome an injury or limitation.
8. You want superior functional strength.

It is my opinion that if your goals are mostly in alignment with 1-5, there may be many different trainers at various price points that can help you reach those goals. If your goals are more in alignment with 6-8, you might consider a trainer at a higher price point, and ask about their credentials and what makes them different.

That said, if you’re most interested in goals 1-5 and you find a trainer at a higher price point who you really like, go for it. You should enjoy your personal training experience.
