Deep Tissue Massage Vs. Myofascial Release

So you’re interested in massage therapy because you think it can help you with some pain or discomfort you’re experiencing, but maybe you’re confused about the differences between the types of massage therapy. In particular, maybe you’re wondering: “What’s the difference between Deep Tissue Massage and Myofascial Release?” Today, I’m going to answer this question.

The shortest answer possible is that most clients can’t tell the difference between Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release, if there is a concrete difference at all.

The History Of Deep Tissue Massage And Myofascial Release.

Both Deep Tissue Massage And Myofascial Release share the same lineage. They were both “created” by Rolfers who wanted to teach what they had learned through Rolfing, but couldn’t because Rolfing was a trademarked term. The solution was to brand what they were teaching as something else. Hence, “Deep Tissue Massage” and “Myofasical Release” were born.

Deep Tissue Massage was created by Advanced Rolfer Art Riggs and Myofascial Release was created by Rolfers Robert Ward and Physical Therapist, John Barnes.

The Differences Between Deep Tissue And Myofascial Release - If There Are Any Concrete Differences.

There are no major characteristics distinguishing Deep Tissue Massage from Myofascial Release, other than they are different certifications. That said, there does tend to be one difference between them. That is that in Myofascial Release holds tend to be longer, slower, and perhaps involve more stretching as soft tissue is released. That said, none of these concepts are unique to Myofascial Release and are likely to be part of a great Deep Tissue Massage.

Conclusion

Many massage therapists hold numerous certifications and know a variety of techniques. When searching for a massage therapist in San Francisco, it’s more important to search for someone who is experienced vs someone who knows this or that technique, as most techniques tend to overlap and blend together. A great therapist will know which of their techniques are most effective and when they should be employed for your benefit.
