If you have a painful/problematic area that you’re thinking about treating with Myofascial Release, the next questions becomes: “Where should I get Myofascial Release? You might also be wondering: “Do Physical Therapists do Myofascial Release?” Today, I’m going to address whether physical therapists perform Myofascial Release, and whether you should hire a Physical Therapist.
First, let’s cover whether Myofascial Release is part of a Physical Therapy education. The first thing you need to know is that while physical therapy education varies greatly, most schools don’t focus on soft tissue manipulation, massage therapy, or methods like Myofascial Release. Instead, they focus on subjects like physiology, anatomy, orthopedic assessment, and a myriad of other topics. This is because the scope and settings that Physical Therapists work in is quite broad, so their programs are as well. I personally had a friend who graduated from Physical Therapy school in Missouri, and learning to perform soft tissue work like Myofascial Release was generally something he did outside of official classes. You should not expect that a physical therapist learned Myofascial Release in school.
Most of the Physical Therapists who learn Myofascial Release or other forms of soft tissue work do so outside of physical therapy school by taking continuing education workshops. These might include Myofascial Release workshops, or Active Release Technique seminars. These educational opportunities are also available to massage therapists and chiropractors, which is why I personally become a massage therapist.
Some Physical Therapists are highly skilled at Myofascial Release and other soft tissue techniques. If you can find one, especially one who takes insurance, you should absolutely see that therapist. Alternatively, there are also massage therapists who are highly skilled with Myofascial Release and charge a much lower rate. My recommendation is to search a variety of professionals in your area who practice Myofascial Release and make your decision based primarily on online reviews, your finances, the the availability of the therapist.
