Myofascial Release And Insurance

One of the common questions I receive from new clients is: “Can I use insurance to pay for Myofascial Release?” The short answer is that YES it is possible to get your insurance to cover Myofascial Release, depending on your circumstances or your plan. Below are some ways that you may be able to get your Myofascial Release covered by insurance.

1. Your Insurance Will Reimburse You For Massage Therapy.

Some types of insurance will reimburse you for money spent on massage therapy. The only way to find out if your specific plan covers massage therapy is to contact your provider directly. Sometimes, in order to get reimbursed your provider will require a receipt along with your massage therapist’s license number. Other times they will also require your providers business license number.

If you were recently in a car crash or other accident it is also possible that your provider will reimburse you for massage therapy. Again, the only way to find out if you are eligible is to contact your provider.

2. You Find A Physical Therapist Who Does Myofascial Release And Will Take Your Insurance Or Your Insurance Will Reimburse You.

Most physical therapists focus their energies on corrective exercise because it’s easier than practicing Myofascial Release and they can treat more people. However, there are some physical therapists out there who do practice Myofascial Release. It is possible that they will either be able to charge your insurance directly or your insurance will reimburse you for physical therapy out of network. Please note that I am NOT a physical therapist by trade, but a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT).

3. Find A Chiropractor Who Practices Myofascial Release Or Get Myofascial Release "In House" As Part Of Your Chiropractic Care.

Sometimes an insurance plan only covers chiropractic. In this case, you may be able to find a chiropractor who does Myofascial Release. The downside of this is that chiropractors generally work in 15 to 30 minute increments, and may not provide long enough treatments.

Alternatively, sometimes chiropractors hire massage therapists or physical therapists in house who practice Myofascial Release and can bill that Myofascial Release as part of your Chiropractic care.

What To Do If You Can't Get Myofascial Release Through A Physical Therapist/Chiropractor And/Or Don't Want To Call Around For 3 Hours.

While using insurance is always a great option when possible, it’s not the only affordable choice. Massage therapists often know Myofascial Release, and will charge around HALF the rate of a licensed Physical Therapist or Chiropractor for comparable care. Often times it’s not worth the headache of going through insurance and waiting to get the help you need. If you’re in San Francisco, feel free to come into my office or if you’re outside of San Francisco, consider searching a local massage therapist in your area who has extensive trainings outside of basic massage therapy.
