How To Tell If You Need Myofascial Release

If you clicked on this article, you probably have some level of pain or discomfort and you’re wondering: “How do I know if I need Myofascial Release?” While just about everyone can benefit from Myofascial Release, here are some things to consider.

Myofascial Release Alone Might Not Be Enough To Solve Your Problem.

While soft tissue work including Myofascial Release can produce almost “miraculous results” for many people, many problems involve more than just soft tissue adhesions. In particular, motor control (i.e. coordination) and hardware (bone structure, joint tissues, etc) are problems that Myofascial Release can’t fix, although it can certainly make any of these conditions much more manageable. While Myofascial Release is a great place to start, know that you might need corrective exercise and other interventions.

Pressing "Reset" With Myofascial Release

Regardless of whether soft tissue adhesions are part or most of your problem, the advantage of receiving Myofascial Release in any circumstance is that it “resets” the soft tissues. With your soft tissues reset, your body and your nervous system will be primed to change, and other methods like corrective exercise and chiropractic will be more effective. This is why the best physical therapist and chiropractors in the world and often beginning their sessions with soft tissue work like Myofascial Release.

There Are Other Ways To Reduce Tightness

One of the main reasons people seek Myofascial Release is to cope with chronic tightness. While I never discourage my clients from coming in for Myofascial Release, I do want them to know that chronic tightness is almost always rooted in faulty movement patterning that can be addressed through corrective exercise and personal training. I’m serious – if you learn to move better, after several months you can expect your perceived “tightness” to go down 60-90%. If you love massage therapy, keep coming in for Myofascial Release. However, if you want to take your wellness to the next level, consider investing in training! If you’re unsure of where to start, my recommendation is to come in for a Massage Therapy/Myofascial Release session, and take it from there.
